Armenian-Australian Figure Becomes First Female Premier of New South Wales

Armenian-Australian figure Gladys Berejiklian has celebrated victory in the recent elections in New South Wales, becoming the first female figure to be elected as the Premier of the state.

According to Armenpress, this was reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Berejiklian's political force, the Liberal Party, defeated its main rival, the Labor Party.

Following the announcement of the election victory, Gladys Berejiklian attempted to hold back tears, stating that New South Wales is a place where "a woman with a long surname can be elected as Premier."

"I am incredibly proud of the place we live in. And what matters most to me is that no matter your background, where you live, or under what circumstances, everyone has the opportunity to be their best in this state," Berejiklian said in a speech before her supporters after the victory.

Despite comments from opposition leader and Labor Party head Michael Daley noting that the declared election results are not yet final, he nevertheless called to congratulate Gladys Berejiklian.

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison also congratulated the Armenian-Australian figure and her team on their "remarkable, disciplined, and courageous victory" in the elections.

It is still unclear whether Berejiklian's party will form a majority government.

It is worth noting that Gladys Berejiklian has served as Premier of New South Wales since 2017. At that time, the leader of the Liberal Party, Mike Baird, had resigned, and the party members unanimously chose Berejiklian as the new leader and head of the state.
