Arusyak Julhakyan, the candidate for the chair of the Permanent Commission on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly, addressed the issue of pre-trial detention and alternative measures in her concluding speech. According to her, there has already been some progress in this area in Armenia.

“Yes, alternative measures have already been provided. We have included this in the new Criminal Procedure Code that we adopted,” said Julhakyan.

She noted that representatives of the authorities have complained for years about investigative bodies and the prosecutor's office for not applying alternative measures sufficiently.

According to Julhakyan, this year has marked a positive change in the statistics of prisons. “For the first time this year, it has been recorded that the number of individuals serving their sentences in prisons exceeds the number of detainees. Previously, our statistics were different. Now we have managed to change that poor situation,” she declared.

At the same time, Julhakyan emphasized that work in this direction must continue.
