The Armenian People Face Two Referendums Imposed from Abroad: Anna Grigoryan
“The Armenian people find themselves caught between two referendums imposed from abroad. In one case, it is the question of constitutional change imposed by Aliyev, and in the other, it is the referendum on the EU and EAEU being presented or forced by the President of the Russian Federation. And this is truly a disgrace that our Armenian people must discuss their future with external forces,” stated Anna Grigoryan, the leader of the 'Armenia' parliamentary faction, during her speech in the National Assembly.
Addressing the potential changes to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, Grigoryan remarked, “As for the changes to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, I would unhesitatingly call this new Constitution the Aliyev Constitution.”
It was promised back in March that a new Constitution would be published, but it has yet to be released.
“It is unclear what referendum we are even talking about, when the text has not even been published, despite promises,” she noted.
According to Grigoryan, no Constitution can be put to referendum until it has been approved by the National Assembly with the necessary majority.
“The Armenian people, collectively, have rejected that choice of Constitution, by not giving the political majority a two-thirds majority. That is, no Constitution can be subjected to a referendum until two-thirds of the National Assembly has approved it,” said Anna Grigoryan.
