Armenia is Moving Away from Russia Towards the Hostile EU Under the Guise of 'Diversification': Russian Foreign Ministry

The Armenian authorities are concealing their abandonment of Eurasian integration and traditional allied relations with Russia under the word 'diversification' and are pivoting towards what Moscow considers to be a hostile European Union. This was stated by Alexey Fadeev, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“One should not replace concepts, because if the term 'diversification' hides a turn from Eurasian integration and traditional allies towards the European Union, which has an openly hostile stance towards Russia and is seriously discussing the possibility of direct confrontation with it, then the conclusion here is obvious,” Fadeev said while commenting on the latest statements from Armenian leadership.

According to him, this is “an obvious deception” not only towards partners in Eurasian integration but also towards the citizens of Armenia. Fadeev insisted that the socio-economic consequences of the 'jump' towards Europe are being concealed from the public, while existing problems in the export sector are portrayed as a result of Moscow's restrictions.

“These are not our restrictions, but rather the reality that awaits Armenia if traditional ties are severed,” emphasized the Russian diplomat.

Fadeev also noted that the cooperation agreements signed between Yerevan and Western countries, according to him, do not have legal force, in contrast to existing Armenian-Russian contracts and agreements.

He also reminded that in 2024, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen wrote in a report of the 'Friends of Armenia' network that for the West, Armenia is a “low-cost project.”
