Arthur Sargsyan is a political hostage, the persecution against him must stop, says 'Armenia' alliance
The 'Armenia' alliance has issued a statement regarding the house arrest conditions of National Assembly member Arthur Sargsyan. According to the alliance, on July 30, the court denied his defenders' request to lift the house arrest and extended it for another month.
The 'Armenia' alliance asserts that the court's decision lacks sufficient legal justification and contradicts the Constitutional Court's ruling on December 7, 2021. The statement reveals that Arthur Sargsyan, as an elected representative of the people, is deprived of the opportunity to freely exercise his powers, which the alliance considers a violation not only of the rights of the member of parliament but also of the functioning of the National Assembly and the electoral rights of citizens.
The 'Armenia' alliance declared that it views Arthur Sargsyan as a 'political hostage' and insists that the ongoing processes against him aim to restrict parliamentary activity and silence the opposition voice. The alliance has also demanded the immediate release of Arthur Sargsyan, all defendants in the '18 Justs' case, and, as stated in the announcement, all political prisoners.
According to the statement, the alliance will convey its complaint and alarm regarding the court's decision to international partners.
