Armenia Requests Georgia to Relocate 5.5 km Section of Gas Pipeline

The 5.5-kilometer section of the gas pipeline connecting Georgia and Armenia will be relocated at Armenia's request. The corresponding application has already been submitted to the Environmental Monitoring Department of the Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection.

According to the documents, the change in the pipeline's location is due to the request from the Armenian side, as the Armenian section of the gas pipeline is located in a tripartite border zone of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan and was mined in the 1990s.

"Given that it is impossible to maintain minimum safety standards and carry out repair work in this section, it has been decided to remove the problematic section of the pipeline from the mined area and construct a new pipeline at a safe distance, based on the tripartite intergovernmental agreement," the justification for the relocation states.

The pipeline will be moved a few kilometers and will connect to a newly constructed section from the Armenian side. The pipeline from Georgia to Armenia is one of the main routes for natural gas supply. Armenia receives Russian gas through Georgian transit infrastructure.
