Europe is 'Hunting' American Scientists
Since the beginning of Donald Trump's second presidential term in the U.S., the outflow of scientific personnel has reportedly intensified, according to several media outlets. Among the reasons cited are cuts in federal funding and strained relations between the administration and universities.
Last week, the Pentagon suspended its cooperation with Harvard University, including scholarship support, justifying the decision by labeling the institution's ideas as 'globalist and radical.'
Media reports also highlight the impact of immigration policy. It has been noted that certain research laboratories may cease operations if foreign specialists employed there face deportation.
In light of the situation, European countries are attempting to capitalize on the opportunity. According to the Guardian, Austria plans to attract around 50 American scientists over the next year by offering jobs, an expedited admission process, and scholarships. In France, a 'scientific asylum' program has already drawn interest from about 500 researchers.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated last year that the European Union should become 'an attractive hub for researchers.' The 'Choose Europe' initiative is expected to allocate around $1.1 billion to support scientific research.
