US Withdraws Most of Its Troops from Iraq
The United States has completed the withdrawal of its troops from facilities in Iraq, with the exception of the Kurdistan region, according to CNN, citing the country's Ministry of Defense.
According to the ministry, the last group of American military advisors has left the Ain al-Asad airbase located in the Anbar province of western Iraq, where American troops had been stationed for over two decades.
The US-led coalition, which is fighting against ISIS, has transferred control of military facilities to the full oversight of Iraqi security forces. The American military presence in the country now remains only at the Al-Harir airbase in Erbil province in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The US Central Command has confirmed to CNN that the Iraqi Ministry of Defense's statement is accurate, but it did not provide further details.
Since December 2021, when the US armed forces announced the end of their combat mission in Iraq, about 2,500 soldiers have remained in the country to support Iraqi forces. Since 2023, the Iraqi government has been calling for the US to withdraw its troops from the country.
