Prosecutor's Office Demands Samvel Karapetyan's Arrest: Aram Vardevanyan
On January 5, 2026, the first working day of the year, the Prosecutor General's Office and the Investigative Committee carried out two actions: 1) a complaint was lodged against the house arrest decision of Samvel Karapetyan, demanding his immediate arrest, and 2) the request for Samvel Karapetyan to visit his father's grave on the anniversary of his death was denied. This was stated by human rights defender Aram Vardevanyan on his Facebook page.
“Our legal team has also submitted and will continue to submit complaints against the house arrest decision. However, a question arises: when the degrees of limitation of rights for arrest and house arrest are identical according to the Constitutional Court and the European Court, furthermore, the latter was applied to Samvel Karapetyan with possible and impossible additional restrictions—what grounds should have been presented for the complaint?” he wrote.
The answer is obvious; there is no reasoning, no grounds, but there is an explicitly unlawful position that undermines and denies rights, aimed at keeping Samvel Karapetyan in custody. This absurdity of political persecution has been ongoing for about 7 months. Additional details regarding these developments will be presented soon. Justice must prevail. Freedom for all political prisoners…” he concluded.
