Foreign Ministry Clarifies Reasons for Notifying Turkey About Araks Project
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia has clarified why Yerevan is notifying Turkey about the planned dam project on the Araks River, in response to a query from Sputnik Armenia. It was previously noted that Armenia has been discussing the construction of a dam on the Araks River with Turkey for about one and a half years, despite the convention on border rivers not providing for 'agreement.'
The Foreign Ministry stated that Armenia has informed Turkey about the ongoing fortification works within the framework of contractual provisions. ‘At the same time, there are communications and consultations between the parties as necessary,’ the department emphasized.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure had previously spoken of a process not of 'notification' but rather of 'agreement,' highlighting that discussions of project documents are continuing with the Turkish side through the mediation of the Foreign Ministry. Such a response was also provided last summer.
