Azerbaijani Ship Nominated for EU Sanctions List, Considered Part of Russia's Shadow Fleet
The European Union has included the Azerbaijani tanker 'Khankendi' in its draft for the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which the EU considers to be part of Russia's shadow fleet. The package is yet to be approved by EU member states, according to Hetq.
It is worth noting that the most recent sanctions package, the 18th, was adopted by the EU Council in July of this year. Among other actions, the EU added 105 ships related to Russia to its sanctions list.
According to the regulation adopted by the Council of the European Union in July, the addition of these 105 vessels, which are part of the shadow fleet for oil tankers or contribute to Russia's energy revenues, aims to restrict the operations of ships identified in Decision 2014/512 that are prohibited from entering the ports and locks of EU member states, as well as from utilizing a broad range of maritime transport-related services.
Among these 105 ships are the tankers 'Shusha' (the Azerbaijani name for the occupied city of Shusha) and 'Karabakh,' which are intended for transporting crude oil. The justification for including these Azerbaijani ships on the EU's sanctions list is based on the assertion that they transport crude oil or petroleum products originating from Russia or exported from Russia, using unconventional and high-risk navigation methods.
