A Final Step is Necessary: Hajiyev on Peace Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan already exists. If you look at our borders, you will see peace and stability. This was announced by Hikmet Hajiyev, an adviser to the President of Azerbaijan.
“Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan already exists. If you look at our borders, you will see peace and stability. We have a bilateral connection with Armenia. We discuss problematic issues directly, without a mediator. We have managed to shift our relations from military confrontation to a political dispute,” he said.
According to Hajiyev, a new status quo has been established in the region based on legality and legitimacy. “Peace can exist on paper, but the situation on the ground can be different. Now we have the opposite situation. There is peace on the ground, the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is stable, and Nagorno-Karabakh is no longer a subject of discussion. Armenian forces have been completely withdrawn from all Azerbaijani territories. However, for the peace agreement to be finalized, one more last step is necessary,” he added.
Azerbaijan expects Armenia to make amendments to its Constitution, which allegedly still contains provisions regarding territorial claims against Azerbaijan. “Nevertheless, it is positive that we have a bilateral connection with Armenia. We discuss problematic issues directly, without any mediator. There are indeed important topics on our agenda. The key point remains that elements of military confrontation are completely out of our agenda. Yes, we still have disputes between us, but disputes between neighboring countries are normal. We even see them among some EU member states. But there are diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes. We have managed to shift our relations with Armenia from military confrontation to a political dispute. And I believe that is a good sign,” Hajiyev emphasized.
