Helping Ukraine, But At A Cost: New Rules of the Game from the US
According to reports from "The New York Times," a new draft of the US-Ukraine mining agreement lacks provisions for providing security guarantees to Kyiv. Instead, the updated version of the document includes requirements that were previously rejected by Kyiv. These stipulate that Washington will oversee the operations of Ukraine's reconstruction fund, while Kyiv is obliged to repay the full support received from the US.
According to the project, the US will demand all profits generated by the fund until Ukraine compensates for the equivalent amount of assistance received, plus an annual interest of 4%. Although the specific amount of debt is not mentioned, earlier discussions suggested a figure of $350 billion. Now, this is compounded by an additional 4% annual profit.
On April 11, a Ukrainian delegation arrived in Washington to negotiate the mining contract. Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna has stated that the negotiations will last for two days and will have a technical nature, without the participation of high-ranking officials.
