Trump Declares State of Emergency in the U.S.
The United States has declared a state of emergency due to trade imbalances posing a threat to national security. This announcement was made by President Donald Trump.
“The source of this threat lies outside the United States, in the internal economic policies of major trading partners and the structural imbalances in the global trading system. I hereby declare a national emergency in connection with this threat,” he stated.
Trump noted that there is “no reciprocity” in the U.S. trading relationships with other countries. Moreover, these relationships have become “incredibly imbalanced, especially in recent years.”
It is worth mentioning that the U.S. has imposed tariffs on products from a total of 185 countries; however, Russia and Belarus have not been included on this list. The duty rates are calculated based on the principle of reciprocity, being half of the tariffs set by those countries on imports from the U.S.
