Germany Begins First Permanent Troop Deployment Abroad Since WWII
Germany has officially commenced its first permanent troop deployment abroad since World War II. Berlin is taking steps to reinforce NATO's Eastern flank in response to the war in Ukraine against Russia.
According to reports, a 5,000-strong armored brigade will be stationed in Lithuania. As Politico notes, the unit is expected to be fully operational by 2027 and will ultimately be based in the new Rudninkai military complex, located about 30 kilometers south of Vilnius. In the meantime, the troops will operate from temporary bases in Lithuania.
This deployment represents a significant part of NATO's transition towards deterrence through frontline defense.
