Britain Calls on Azerbaijan
In the House of Lords of Great Britain, a question has been raised regarding the brutal treatment of 23 Armenians captured by Azerbaijan from Nagorno-Karabakh. The question was posed by the Bishop of Winchester, and the response was provided by Baroness Jenny Chapman, a member of the Labour Party, who presented the answer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Development.
The bishop inquired about the statements made by the British authorities to the Azerbaijani government and what actions are being taken in coordination with international partners to ensure the fulfillment of Azerbaijan's international obligations.
In response, Baroness Chapman noted that Great Britain has called on the Azerbaijani authorities to ensure that individuals detained during military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023 face fair trials and are kept in safe conditions, in accordance with Azerbaijan’s international commitments.
“Our embassy in Baku is closely monitoring these cases and regularly requests updates to remain informed about ongoing developments. We also continuously urge the release of all remaining prisoners of war. Minister of State Stephen Doughty discussed these matters with Elchin Amirbekov, the special representative of the President of Azerbaijan, during his visit to Britain in October 2024. During a meeting with Hikmet Hajiyev, the chief advisor to the President of Azerbaijan, on March 10, 2025, he emphasized the importance of signing a peace agreement. The same messages have also been conveyed by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary of Great Britain,” the response stated.
