China to Create 'Artificial Sun'
China plans to use thermonuclear fusion technology to produce clean energy by mid-century, according to Bloomberg.
Thermonuclear fusion is a process where light atomic nuclei are converted into heavier nuclei, releasing a significant amount of energy. This mechanism underpins the operation of the Sun and other stars. Unlike traditional nuclear energy, which is based on the fission of atomic nuclei, thermonuclear reactions do not produce radioactive waste and are considered an almost inexhaustible source of energy.
According to the publication, only a few countries, including the USA, Russia, and South Korea, have made progress in researching thermonuclear fusion. However, China is actively ramping up its scientific and technological efforts to become a leader in this field.
In addition to research on thermonuclear fusion, Beijing plans to increase the production of small reactors and add traditional nuclear power plants. Since 2022, the country has been set to approve about 10 new reactors each year, according to CNNC. By 2030, China could surpass the USA and France, becoming the world's largest nuclear power.
