Russia Cancels Ruling on Polygamy
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims in Russia has annulled the fatwa titled "Polygamy Issues in the Muslim Community of the Russian Federation", which permitted Muslims to enter multiple religious marriages simultaneously. This was announced by the council's president, Shamil Aliau td inov, on his Telegram channel, as reported by Meduza.
He clarified that the decision was made in response to the reaction from the Prosecutor General's Office and Russian society. "This is the will of God, and the Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims in Russia sees no point in entering into a dispute," wrote Aliau td inov.
On December 19, Mufti Ildar Aliau td inov of Moscow announced the adoption of the fatwa concerning "Polygamy Issues in the Muslim Community of the Russian Federation." He stated that the condition for Muslims to enter multiple religious marriages was the "fair and equal treatment of all women by the husband." On December 23, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation proposed to revoke the ruling due to the fatwa issued by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims in Russia.
The agency stated that the fatwa "contradicts current legislation and the foundations of state family policy in preserving and strengthening traditional Russian spiritual and moral values." The Prosecutor's Office also reminded that Article 14 of the Family Code of the Russian Federation does not allow marriage between individuals if at least one of them is already registered in another marriage.
