A Historic Opportunity Has Been Created for Armenia and Azerbaijan: Fidan
The foreign ministers of Turkey and Germany, Hakan Fidan and Annalena Baerbock, held a meeting in Ankara, as announced by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions focused on the situations in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine. After the meeting, Baerbock emphasized that the security of the Kurds is crucial for a free and secure future for Syria. “It was pleasing to hear that the Turkish foreign minister also acknowledges this,” the German diplomat stated.
At the same time, Baerbock mentioned that there should be no threats to Turkey's security from Syria. According to her, Kurdish militias in Syria should disarm and join the security forces of the new Syrian government.
Fidan stated that the self-defense forces of the Syrian Kurds, which Ankara links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, do not represent Kurdish society. The minister asserted that militants should disarm and dissolve themselves.
Media reports indicate that the discussions also touched upon the South Caucasus. Fidan declared that a historic opportunity has arisen for the signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He noted that third parties should provide “fair and impartial” support to this process.
