Which Countries Does Trump Intend to Make U.S. States?
Canada and Mexico should become part of the United States if they want to continue receiving aid from Washington. This opinion was expressed by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Newsweek.
“We subsidize Canada with over $100 billion a year. We subsidize Mexico with nearly $300 billion. Why should we be doing that? Instead of subsidies, they should become new states,” Trump said.
He apparently had the trade deficit with these countries in mind, but according to the source, Trump exaggerated the figures. According to official U.S. data, the trade deficit in goods and services with Canada was about $41 billion, while the deficit with Mexico exceeded $162 billion.
Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico if the countries do not reduce the flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S.
