Latvia Prohibits Imports of Various Russian and Belarusian Goods

Latvia's authorities have implemented an import ban on industrial goods from Russia and Belarus effective September 1, following a decision developed by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The list of restrictions includes printed books, periodicals, printed materials, clothing, textiles, footwear, hats, as well as toys and sporting goods.

Officials in Riga have stated that the aim of this initiative is to ensure national security and reduce the export revenues from the mentioned countries. The ban also applies to goods of Russian and Belarusian origin that are imported via third countries. However, under the rules of the European Union's single market, if these goods have already entered free circulation in other EU countries, they may legally enter Latvia as well.

The Latvian government plans to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the new regulations. The first summary assessment is expected to be conducted by March 1, 2027, after which the future of the restrictions will become clearer. Experts believe that this decision serves primarily as a political signal, given that in 2025, the imports of these product groups constituted only about 0.05% of Latvia's total imports.
