South Korean President Banned from Leaving the Country
The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea has prohibited President Yoon Suk-yeol from leaving the country. This information was reported by TASS, referencing the "Tona Ilbo" newspaper.
“The exit ban on President Yoon Suk-yeol is effective from December 9 at 15:30,” an official from the agency overseeing immigration issues informed the publication.
South Korean legislation allows for criminal prosecution against the sitting president on charges of insurrection and treason. Earlier, the head of the anti-corruption investigations unit for senior officials announced that he had instructed to impose a travel ban on Yoon Suk-yeol.
An investigation is underway regarding Yoon Suk-yeol's actions concerning allegations of insurrection. On the evening of December 3, Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency to combat “North Korean elements” due to actions by the parliamentary opposition, which was lifted approximately six hours later.
The opposition initiated impeachment procedures on December 4, arguing that the president had violated the constitution as there were no grounds for a state of emergency.
On December 7, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea held a vote regarding the president's impeachment. Impeachment was not declared as the ruling party boycotted the vote. Prior to this, Yoon Suk-yeol apologized to his fellow citizens and announced that he entrusts the affairs of state, including the matter of his term of office, to the ruling party and the government.
