Tensions Persist in Syria: New Developments
In Syria, rebel militants have seized Deir ez-Zor, according to Reuters. The Syrian government army abandoned Deir ez-Zor prior to the militants' entry into the area.
Reports indicate that the city of Daraa in southern Syria has also come under the control of the militants, located just one hundred kilometers from Damascus.
There are reports that the militants have launched attacks on one of Syria's most populated cities, Homs. According to the Sana agency, the Syrian armed forces are positioned north of Homs and are fighting against the militants with the support of Russian forces.
In light of the events in Syria, the Israel Defense Forces have decided to strengthen their units in the Golan Heights region. The IDF has stated that it is monitoring the developments closely.
It is worth noting that the Syrian government has lost control over the city of Daraa, which is significant for Islamist militants, as well as over much of the surrounding province, as reported by AFP citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
