Gyumri Mayor Resigns
The Mayor of Gyumri, Vardges Samsonyan, has resigned. The confirmation came from the mayor's press secretary during a conversation with "Azatutyun," who noted that a statement would be released shortly. However, the Electoral Commission has not yet submitted the resignation record for the mandates.
Days ago, we reported that on Monday, members of the "Balasanyan" alliance would resign from their mandates, led by Mayor Vardges Samsonyan. The ruling force in Gyumri made this decision following criminal prosecution against former mayor Samvel Balasanyan, his son, and three other close associates, all of whom are involved in a case regarding the expropriation of lands adjacent to Gyumri's Black Fortress.
There is a decision to arrest Balasanyan, who is currently in the USA, while his son was arrested and is under house arrest after posting a bail of 70 million drams.
The second-largest faction in the council, the "Civil Contract," which is in opposition in Gyumri, has already announced plans for early elections and even has a candidate for the mayor position. At the same time, they deny allegations that they are pressuring the "Balasanyan" alliance to establish power in Armenia's second-largest city.
