Israel Outlines Conditions for Troop Withdrawal from Lebanon
Israel has assured the United States that it intends to withdraw its troops from Lebanese territory following the destruction of Lebanese Hezbollah's infrastructure. This was reported by the American portal Axios, citing sources.
According to the source, during a 48-hour high-level negotiation between U.S. and Israeli officials, the Israelis assured the White House that this plan is more narrowly focused on clearing Hezbollah's infrastructure near the Israeli border before subsequently withdrawing Israeli military forces.
Sources indicated that the White House expressed concern over the weekend about Israel potentially preparing for a large ground incursion. Washington conveyed its worries to Israel; an Israeli senior official also informed the portal that the plans for Israeli operations had initially been limited.
On the night of October 1, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the commencement of limited ground assaults against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military stated that there had been "localized, targeted ground assaults" in border villages that pose an immediate threat to Israeli settlements.
