France Remains Without a Prime Minister: What is the Reason?
French President Emmanuel Macron has extended negotiations with party leaders for a new government for the third consecutive day. Meanwhile, Macron has faced heavy criticism after he ruled out appointing a candidate from the left-wing coalition 'New Popular Front' as Prime Minister on the evening of August 26, according to France24.
The 'New Popular Front' coalition won the early parliamentary elections held in July but was unable to form a government on its own as it did not secure an absolute majority.
On August 27, the leaders of the Socialists and Greens announced that they would not participate in further negotiations with Macron to help pull the country out of the political deadlock. They called on their supporters to hold peaceful demonstrations.
The French Prime Minister resigned following the defeat of Macron's centrist coalition 'Together' in the elections, leaving the country struggling to form a government.
Emmanuel Macron had called for early elections three years ahead of schedule due to the far-right’s victory in the European Parliament elections.
