IAEA Chief to Visit Kursk Nuclear Power Plant Tomorrow
On August 27, Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will visit the Kursk nuclear power plant to personally assess the situation at the facility. His remarks are quoted by the agency's press service, as reported by RTVI.
Grossi emphasized that the safety and reliability of all nuclear power plants are the main and fundamental concerns for the IAEA. He noted that he is closely monitoring the situation around the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, especially in light of the "new events and the rise in military activity level" near the plant.
"The safety and reliability of nuclear facilities must under no circumstances be compromised. This is a developing situation, and it is extremely important that tomorrow, upon my arrival at the plant, I personally see the situation and discuss the parameters for further actions that may be required to assess the state of nuclear safety and reliability at the Kursk NPP," Grossi explained.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces began an incursion into the Kursk region on August 6. Two days later, on August 8, Rosatom reported that remnants of struck missiles had been found at the Kursk nuclear power plant. According to the state corporation, the missile parts were discovered in the area of the radioactive waste processing complex. On August 9, the transformer substation in Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located, was disconnected.
