NATO's New Member Identifies Next Secretary General of the Alliance
The next Secretary General of NATO is likely to be Mark Rutte, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The name of the North Atlantic Alliance's next leader was revealed by Finnish President Alexander Stubbs, as reported by Reuters.
Current NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's term ends on October 1 of this year. In addition to Rutte, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is also vying for the position.
Previously, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas complained that Russia had obstructed her from becoming NATO's Secretary General. According to the politician, Moscow has targeted her for espionage, sending a signal to Europeans that Kallas is an anti-Russian provocateur.
