The US and Allies Urge Hamas to Agree to a Ceasefire

The United States and its allies have called on Hamas to agree to a ceasefire. In a joint statement, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and several other nations urged the radical group Hamas to accept President Joe Biden's proposal for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This was reported by Reuters.

“At this critical moment, we call on Israeli leaders, as well as Hamas, to pursue any necessary compromises to finalize this deal,” the statement read. The appeal has also garnered support from leaders in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Denmark, France, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, and Thailand.

President Joe Biden presented a three-phase plan for de-escalating tensions around Gaza on May 31, which was proposed by the Israeli side. “The first phase will last six weeks. It entails a complete cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas in Gaza, the release of a certain number of hostages, including women, the elderly, and the injured, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners,” Biden said. Earlier, G7 leaders had expressed support for the US President's proposal regarding Gaza.
