French Authorities Announce Willingness to Discuss Recognition of Palestine
The French authorities are considering the possibility of recognizing Palestine's independence and have made "significant progress" on this issue, reported Le Monde.
The publication cites statements from former Israeli ambassador to France, Elie Barnavi, who attempted to persuade the French administration and President Emmanuel Macron to recognize Palestine as a state, though his efforts have been "unsuccessful." However, it is noted that French officials have "moved forward" in discussions about the matter, despite Macron's remarks that the "right moment" for such a decision has not yet come.
During a phone call on May 29 between Macron and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, the French leader urged him to implement "necessary reforms," while the presidential administration expressed a desire to establish "positive dynamics" regarding the recognition of Palestine, as reported by TASS.
In contrast, the Danish parliament voted against a proposal to recognize Palestine as a state. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the necessary conditions for establishing an independent state are currently lacking.
On May 28, Ireland officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. The statement also indicated that Dublin sees the support from the international community as essential. The country is also committed to the pursuit of peace and supporting the regional state system.
