European Parliament Calls on EU Countries Not to Recognize Russian Presidential Election Results

The European Parliament (EP) adopted an anti-Russian resolution during a plenary session in Strasbourg, stating that the presidential elections in the Russian Federation were allegedly not democratic. A total of 493 members voted in favor of the resolution, while 11 voted against, and another 18 abstained.

The text contains claims that there were no real alternative candidates in the elections and declared the voting in the new regions of Russia illegal.

Members of the European Parliament have urged EU countries and the international community not to legally recognize the results of the presidential elections held in Russia. The authors of the resolution also suggested that the EU limit its relations with Moscow regarding regional peace, humanitarian issues, and human rights.

Parliamentarians called on EU countries to support independent civil society organizations, independent media, and human rights defenders and to provide support for the democratic opposition in Russia.
