«Sra vra petq e kentronac'nel ujaxutyuny» - Klaar
Any report of gunfire at the border is concerning. This was stated by Toivo Klaar, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, in an interview with Azatutyun, addressing the border tensions amidst the backdrop of the Brussels meeting.
When asked whether the ceasefire violations are a response from Baku to the deepening relations between Armenia and the EU, Klaar admitted he does not know. However, he emphasized that the EU wants to see genuine, substantive negotiations that will lead to a peace agreement, agreements on border demarcation, and the opening of communications.
“Attention must be focused on this,” said the EU Special Representative, stressing the need to return to a meaningful negotiation process.
In response to the observation that officials have spoken for six months about the imminent signing of a peace agreement and the question of why a peaceful resolution has not yet been achieved, the EU representative replied: “There could be several reasons, but based on the information I have about where the process stands in different directions, I also believe that it should not take that long to achieve a positive result if there is political will and commitment. And we want to work in that direction with both Armenia and Azerbaijan to achieve a positive outcome. Because, as I said, I believe it should not take that long if there is political commitment from both sides.”
