Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Issues Statement
The provocative actions of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the night of April 5 to 6 have no justification. By opening random fire in numerous sections of the border and moving several dozen military vehicles, Azerbaijan has clearly pursued a provocative agenda aimed at inciting similar retaliatory actions from the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia. This would allow them to obtain alleged evidence supporting recent Azerbaijani disinformation.
The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia assessed the situation and did not engage in actions that would escalate tensions, after which the situation at the border calmed down.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia reiterates that Armenia is not interested in escalating the situation in the region and calls on Azerbaijan to cease actions aimed at provoking tensions. We also consider Azerbaijan's assessments regarding the establishment of defensive structures in the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia to be unjustified, as reforms of the army and military infrastructure are the sovereign rights of any country.
At the same time, we remind that Armenia's proposals to Azerbaijan on the mutual withdrawal of troops from the state border, the establishment of mechanisms for weapons control, the signing of a non-aggression treaty, and demilitarization of the areas adjacent to the state border remain unaddressed by Azerbaijan.
Additionally, the accusations directed at Armenia regarding the acquisition of weapons for defensive purposes are incomprehensible, especially considering that Azerbaijan acquires weapons in quantities many times greater than those of the Republic of Armenia, which Armenia receives comprehensive information about.
On this occasion, we officially reaffirm Armenia's commitment to a peace agenda, as well as our proposal to Azerbaijan for the establishment of mutual mechanisms for weapons control and the demilitarization of areas adjacent to the border between the two countries.
