Ursula von der Leyen Nominated for Second Term as EU Commission President
The European People's Party (EPP) has voted in favor of nominating the current President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for a second term. This was reported by Reuters.
Von der Leyen's candidacy was supported by 400 delegates, while 89 voted against.
Ursula von der Leyen has held the position of President of the European Commission since December 2019, making her the first woman to do so. Prior to this role, she served as Minister for Family Affairs, Labour and Social Affairs and headed Germany's Ministry of Defence.
The new President of the European Commission will be appointed following elections among the heads of the EU's main institutions from June 6-9. The same individual can serve for no more than two five-year terms.
Earlier today, Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas declined a proposal to participate as a candidate in the elections for the EU Commission's leadership.
