The Grandson of a Ruling Party MP Will Not Be Punished for Injuring a Student
The criminal case opened regarding the incident involving the grandson of ruling party MP Gagik Melkonyan has been terminated. This was reported by the Investigative Committee of Armenia in response to a query from the 'Joghovurd' newspaper.
'Joghovurd' reminds that on November 27, 2023, at the Yerevan College of Law and Management, the MP's grandson, Gagik Karen Melkonyan, stabbed another student from the same university. However, the victim did not report the incident to the police, claiming that the injury was due to a fall.
Later, the police discovered that it was Gagik Karen Melkonyan who had inflicted the injury on the student. A criminal case was initiated regarding this matter; however, as anticipated within the justice system created by Nikol Pashinyan, the grandson of the ruling party MP will not face punishment.
In response to the inquiry from 'Joghovurd,' the Investigative Committee stated: 'The preliminary investigation regarding the incident that occurred between two minor students in the yard of the Yerevan College of Law and Management on November 27, 2023, based on Article 171, Part 2, Clause 4 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, has been completed. The investigation clarified all circumstances under which one of the aforementioned minors inflicted bodily harm on the other. Considering that during the preliminary investigation, applications were received from both minors stating that they had reconciled and wish for no criminal prosecution on the basis of reconciliation, a petition was presented to the prosecution to refrain from public criminal prosecution based on Article 12, Part 1, Clause 12 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia, which was granted, and the criminal case was terminated.'
It remains to be clarified why the victim refused to file a complaint—whether due to pressure or if they genuinely 'reconciled.'
