Papoyan Addresses Azerbaijani Demands Regarding 8 Villages
Armenia has never promised anything; Armenia has stated that it is ready for the delimitation and demarcation of borders based on the maps of 1974-1975. This was stated today in a conversation with journalists by Gevorg Papoyan from the ruling Civil Contract party, while addressing Azerbaijani demands related to eight villages.
According to him, the maps indicate that in the same Tavush region, there are 7-8 villages whose arable lands are entirely under Azerbaijani control.
“Now, if you look at the map, the border is very zigzagged. One possible option is that the border remains as it is; another option is that some arable lands, which belong to our villages, should naturally revert back to Armenia. This demarcation and delimitation is that process, but one thing is clear: we will maintain the area of 29.8 thousand square kilometers,” he noted.
Papoyan remarked that all of this should be reflected within the framework of a “peace treaty.” “One of the most important provisions of the treaty must ensure the territorial integrity of Armenia. There should be no clauses containing bombs there,” Papoyan added.
In response to a question regarding Azerbaijan's aspirations to reach Tigranashen, a point also mentioned by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and what territorial integrity the government is now discussing, Gevorg Papoyan replied that such thoughts are absurd. “You and Aliyev are the ones discussing those eight villages. Don't argue with me,” said the Civil Contract representative.
