US Deems It Necessary to Abandon Russian Nuclear Fuel
The United States considers it essential to take decisive measures to free itself from the supply of nuclear fuel from Russia, which poses a serious threat to the country’s security. This was stated by the Assistant Secretary of Energy, Katherine Haaf, in an interview with the Financial Times.
She urged the US Congress to allocate the necessary resources to restore domestic supply chains and limit imports, considering that the Russian Federation controls nearly half of the world’s uranium enrichment capabilities.
Haaf noted that Russia has successfully worked for years to disrupt the US nuclear supply chain by "flooding global markets with cheap enriched uranium products," which she stated has had a damaging effect on the US fuel cycle.
