Recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as Part of Azerbaijan by Yerevan Changes Fundamental Terms of Tripartite Agreement: Russian Foreign Ministry
In connection with the escalation of armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, we urge the conflicting parties to immediately halt bloodshed, military operations, and exclude casualties among civilians. This was announced by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan by official Yerevan in October 2022 and May 2023 has fundamentally affected the fate of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. This has changed the fundamental terms of the tripartite agreement. Since their deployment in the region, Russian peacekeepers have diligently fulfilled the tasks of ensuring ceasefire, as well as establishing communication between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides. Our peacekeepers have coordinated efforts to rectify the humanitarian situation on the ground, as well as facilitated direct dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert. Even at this moment, they are providing assistance to the civilian population, including medical aid, and are engaged in evacuations.
The main priority now is to urgently return to the implementation of the package of tripartite agreements at the highest level from 2020-2022, which clearly outlines all the steps for the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, cessation of armed confrontation, and ensuring the rights and security of the population in Nagorno-Karabakh," the statement reads.
