VIDEO: Bridge Collapse in India Claims at Least 17 Lives
In the Indian state of Mizoram, a bridge under construction near the city of Aizawl has collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 17 workers. The Chief Minister of Mizoram announced the tragedy on his X (formerly Twitter) social media account.
"Today, a bridge being constructed in Sayrang, not far from Aizawl, has collapsed. At least 17 workers have died, and rescue operations are ongoing," the Chief Minister reported.
According to police, the death toll may be higher as not all bodies have been recovered from the rubble. No information has been released regarding the causes of the incident.
The Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has promised to provide 200,000 rupees (approximately 2,200 euros) to the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (about 550 euros) for those injured in the accident.
