South Korea's President's Mother-in-Law Arrested

The law enforcement authorities of the Republic of Korea have arrested the mother-in-law of President Yoon Suk Yeol, Choi Yun-sun, for falsifying bank documents related to the remaining balance. This was reported by the Korea Herald.

The court has rejected her appeal against a one-year prison sentence handed down in 2021 for violating the law. She was not arrested afterward.

The 76-year-old Choi Yun-sun pleaded not guilty in court and fainted when her appeal was rejected. The mother-in-law of the South Korean president is accused of forging a deposit certificate amounting to 34.7 billion won (approximately 27 million dollars), which she then used to purchase land in Seongnam city, south of Seoul, in 2013. The appeals court has classified this as a serious crime.

Previously, she faced allegations of fraud, having received approximately 1.7 million dollars in public health insurance benefits in 2015. She established an elderly care facility without the necessary medical license. Initially, she was sentenced to three years in prison, but last year, a Seoul court ultimately exonerated her.
