Global Cocaine Use Reaches Record Levels: UN

Currently, a record number of people worldwide are using cocaine, according to a report by the United Nations. This information was reported by the Daily Mail.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reports that more than 22 million people used the drug at least once in 2021, a five percent increase compared to 21 million in the previous year. Additionally, it marks the fourth consecutive year of rising cocaine consumption.

The report indicates that in total, 296 million people used drugs in 2021, which is a 23 percent increase compared to a decade ago. The agency warned of a "sustained rise" in both the supply and demand for cocaine globally, indicating that this presents a risk of emerging new markets in other countries.

Most of the cocaine market is concentrated in North and South America, where Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia are the leading producers. However, significant markets have also emerged in Western and Central Europe, as well as Australia. Markets in Africa, Asia, and Southeast Europe are also growing rapidly, though they remain at lower levels, experts noted.

The report also states that a record amount of agricultural land is being allocated for the cultivation of coca plants, which are used to produce cocaine. Estimates indicate that 315,000 hectares are now used for coca production, with total production reaching 2,304 tons, both of which are record highs. In 2021, the amount of seized cocaine amounted to 2,026 tons.
