British Intelligence Reports on Russian 'Fighting' Dolphins

Since the summer of 2022, the Russian Navy has made significant investments to strengthen the security of its Black Sea Fleet's main base in Sevastopol, reports British military intelligence.

"At least four layers of nets and buoys have been installed near the harbor entrance, and in recent weeks this defense has been reinforced with trained marine mammals," the report states. The number of marine animals patrolling the harbor has nearly doubled, likely including the most well-known breed of dolphins.

In Arctic waters, the Russian Navy also employs belugas and seals. Russia trains marine animals for various tasks; however, those stationed at the Sevastopol harbor are likely intended to counter enemy submarines, according to British intelligence.
