The Rome Statute to be Presented to the National Assembly for Ratification

The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court will soon be presented to the National Assembly for ratification. This was reported by Radar Armenia, which received information from the Government's Information and Public Relations Department.

However, the government has not yet clarified the timelines pertaining to this matter.

It should be noted that the Constitutional Court had issued a decision on March 24 stating that the Rome Statute is in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

Recall that Armenia signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on October 1, 1999, but had not ratified it. The process was interrupted by the Constitutional Court's decision on August 13, 2004, which deemed the Rome document contradictory to the 1995 Constitution.

Considering that the Constitution has been amended twice since then, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government decided to resume the ratification process of the international treaty and applied to the Constitutional Court once again for this purpose.

At the end of 2022, the Armenian government initiated the ratification process of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Justice Minister Grigor Minasyan announced at a government meeting on December 29 that the urgency of the issue is linked to the facts of Azerbaijan's large-scale military aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia and the occupation of territories.

The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Armenia decided on March 24 that Armenia's accession to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court is in line with the country’s fundamental law.
