Former President of Kyrgyzstan Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

The Pervomaisky District Court in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, has sentenced former President Kurmanbek Bakiev to 30 years in prison in connection with the Kumtor case. This was reported by Sputnik Kyrgyzstan.

The court's press service announced that the verdict was delivered on March 1. If Bakiev is apprehended, his property will be confiscated, and theoretically, he will be barred from holding public office for three years after his release.

Considering penalties from other cases, the district court has ruled that Bakiev will serve 30 years in a high-security prison. Kurmanbek Bakiev is the main defendant in the case related to the events of April, during which protesters opposing his regime were shot. The Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic has sentenced him in absentia to life imprisonment, which was subsequently commuted to 30 years due to his age (over 60 at the time of the crime).
