Masked Individual Attacks BBC Front Facade Statue with Hammer in London
A masked individual in London attacked a statue of a controversial sculptor located at the front of the BBC building using a hammer and a cutting tool, PA Media reports. The attacker was also carrying a banner criticizing the corporation. The statue has been at the broadcasting house since 1932 but faced calls for its removal after being targeted last year.
According to police, the man damaged the sculpture. Due to the circumstances of the incident, including its height, there was no opportunity to safely apprehend him. Specialist officers have been called to the scene.
On Tuesday, the broadcaster announced that after considering the historical significance of the building and discussions with leading cultural organizations such as Historic England, renovation work has been approved to be carried out using the corporation's insurance funds.
