Iran Comments on Azerbaijan's Actions
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has commented on reports about the alleged arrest of citizens in Azerbaijan for spying on behalf of Tehran.
“Unfortunately, the Azerbaijani government has been arresting and detaining its citizens for some time now under the pretext of connections with Iranian institutions and on fabricated charges,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani, refuting Azerbaijan's “chain accusations” directed towards Iran.
The spokesperson categorically denied any connection between Iran and the recently arrested citizens. Kanani emphasized that every government has the inherent right to take action against law-breaking citizens, but he indicated that Baku's action of arresting and imprisoning numerous citizens under accusations of ties to Iran is unacceptable and inadmissible.
