Seiran Ohanyan Remains a Deputy: What to Expect

The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports: "The ruling party deprived the leader of the "Hayastan" faction, Seiran Ohanyan, of his parliamentary immunity yesterday. A criminal prosecution process against the opposition deputy will begin.

The Prosecutor General of Armenia, Anna Vardapetyan, submitted three motions for initiating public criminal prosecution against Seiran Ohanyan. The first one relates to the sale of military base lands, the second was classified and discussed in a closed session, and the third pertains to abuses committed during his time in office.

After hearing the prosecutor's motions, members of the ruling party unanimously voted in favor of revoking Ohanyan's parliamentary immunity. The opposition boycotted both the discussion of the issue and the vote.

This means that the ball is now in the court of the prosecutor's office; other matters related to Ohanyan will be addressed in the legal domain. The prosecuting body can now file charges and submit a request to the court to choose imprisonment as a measure of restraint against him.

Although Ohanyan has been stripped of parliamentary immunity, he continues to hold his parliamentary mandate and remains the leader of the "Hayastan" faction. His parliamentary powers will be considered suspended only when a decision to imprison him is made. For imprisonment, the prosecutor must again come to the parliament and obtain the consent of the deputies."
