Call from EU Parliament Members to Charles Michel and Josep Borrell Regarding the Lachin Corridor

A group of Members of the European Parliament has sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, calling for concrete actions to ensure the safety of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to Armenpress, in the letter, MEPs Peter van Dalen, François-Xavier Bellamy, Lars Patrick Berg, François Alphonse, Fabio Massimo Castaldo, and Andrey Kovachev noted that Azerbaijan has once again blocked the only road connecting the Republic of Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh since the morning of December 12, 2022, thus subjecting 120,000 Armenians to a de facto blockade and disrupting their right to free movement.

This also implies that emergency aid and food supplies cannot reach Nagorno-Karabakh. If this situation continues, it will lead to an inevitable humanitarian disaster with dreadful consequences. It is unacceptable that under the guise of environmental actions, the Azerbaijani side is violating the trilateral declaration on the ceasefire dated November 9, 2020, particularly its commitment to ensure the movement of citizens, vehicles, and cargo through the corridor known as the Lachin Corridor in both directions,” the MEPs stated.

They emphasized that since the signing of the declaration in 2020, the Azerbaijani side has been creating difficult conditions for the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh by various means, including using military provocations, psychological threats, and disrupting gas supply in harsh winter conditions.

In their address to Charles Michel and Josep Borrell, the MEPs stated: “We urge you, on behalf of the European Union, to use your authority to take concrete steps to ensure the safety of the indigenous Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. We cannot allow the continuation of the policy of threats and violence carried out by Azerbaijan.”
