Kyrgyzstan Reports Death Toll from Clashes at Tajikistan Border
The death toll among Kyrgyz citizens due to clashes at the border with Tajikistan has reached 36, as reported to RIA Novosti by the press service of the Ministry of Health of the republic on Sunday.
Earlier, the Kyrgyz side reported 24 fatalities and over 120 injuries resulting from the confrontations.
“The total number of fatalities due to the armed conflict in the Batken region has reached 36,” said a representative of the Ministry of Health press service. According to him, 129 Kyrgyz citizens have been injured.
Large-scale clashes began on Friday morning along the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Both sides have accused each other of shelling. Intense fighting between the military forces of both countries continued throughout the day along almost the entire length of the border. A ceasefire was only achieved at night.
On Saturday morning, intermittent clashes resumed. Both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. Gunfire only ceased in the evening.
