Kelbajar Fits Better Than Karvachar, Says MP

MP Vilen Gabrielian from the ruling party shared on his Facebook page: “Good morning, I came to say that I am returning to the topic of Kelbajar-Karvachar again, especially since it turned out that well, I will say this another time...

And so, what I wrote was this: ‘based on the significance, content, and essence and characteristics of the name of the place, Kelbajar fits better than Karvachar.’ Of course, I accept that the sentence is not very well constructed. However, please note, I did not write whether it is Azerbaijani, Armenian, Chinese, or Portuguese; I did not mention that it was first referenced in which century, did not write that it appeared on the map for the first time in which century, did not discuss what the encyclopedic dictionaries of place names claim, and did not address the etymology of the name according to the dictionaries, whether it is Turkic, Persian, Armenian, or Kurdish. I simply wrote that in terms of the characteristics and essence of the place, in sound and meaning, the name Kelbajar, which translates to ‘fortress on the river’ or ‘stone fortress,’ fits much better than Kar-Vachar, especially in terms of meaning.

That is all I wrote; anything else that anyone sees according to their desires and personal attitudes is not written here.”

It should be noted that Azerbaijanis refer to the Armenian-occupied Karvachar as Kelbajar.
